Honey…sweet as.

Honey

Honey is one of the most magnificent food medicines available. It is used in herbal formulas not only for its nutritional properties but also its preservative characteristics. Raw honey provides a potent anti-infection, anti -inflammatory effect. Manuka honey is particularly potent in its anti-bacterial and anti-infection effect.

Once honey is pasteurised it loses many of its beneficial properties. It needs to be unrefined and in its natural state (like so many other things). It has traditionally been applied to burns to great effect and many famous singers are aware of its benefits and have it backstage in the event of sore throat or inflamed vocal cords.

Honey given to children at bedtime did a better job of suppressing night-time coughs than dextromethorphan found in many over-the-counter cough syrups, said research by the University of Maryland so why would you use something synthetic when you can use something natural?

Honey naturally contains hydrogen peroxide the active ingredient that helps with sore throats and coughs. You can make a cough syrup with apple cider vinegar, raw onion and honey. A hot lemon and honey drink is great for a sore throat or if you have a cold. You can add a clove of crushed garlic to really boost it. We have a free health sheet at the clinic that tells you about great natural ways to boost your immune system. Ask for one next time you are in.

Bugs On My Broccoli

I’ve got a little grey bug (aphid) that is infesting my Black Tuscan Kale and Broccoli. It gathers in clusters and spreads from one colony to another. Because the garden is over a small area I’m keeping it under control for now by just squashing the little clusters with my fingers. It works for now but it’s not a good long term solution. I’m sure there is a chemical I could use but I won’t do that. If I sprayed chemicals on the food I grow there would be no point in growing it myself. I could just buy that from any supermarket. I’m not very experienced as a gardener but I suspect lady bugs would be predators of this pest. The solution for me then would be to attract lady bugs and to do that I will go to diggers club and get some seeds for  flowers that are known to do just that. Failing that I will make a chilli and Garlic spray.

What I am aiming to do with this approach is to create an optimised natural environment for the Kale and Broccoli. When the environment is right for healthy plants then healthy plants emerge. You need the right position in the garden facing the right way; you need the right nutrients in the soil, the right temperature, the right amount of sunlight, the right amount of moisture and so on. When you have all the conditions just right for healthy kale and broccoli, you have healthy kale and broccoli in abundance. When you have all the conditions right for little grey bugs you have healthy little grey bugs in abundance. Health is exactly like that in your body. Create the right conditions for health and health will emerge, create the right conditions for disease and disease will emerge.

Wouldn’t it be easier to just hit it with chemicals? Of course, but the price of short cuts is way too high.

A Medical problem or a health problem?

Are the two the same thing? I guess it depends on your definition of the terms. Dorlans Medical Dictionary says that ‘health is a state of optimal physical mental and social wellbeing, not merely the absence of disease and infirmity’. A medical condition to me implies a disorder that is purely the domain of the medical profession. This implies a lack of freedom of choice for the health consumer. With the corruption that occurs in the peer review process, drug trials not being not being released, drugs being marketed off label illegally, multinational corporation being sued for billions of dollars for unscrupulous activity, not to mention their influence over universities by sponsorship and some of the devastating side effects of many drugs, I would contend that freedom of choice and competition in health care is essential to healthy outcomes.

Health care is not a charity. It is the biggest industry on the planet. With the possible exception of the Agricultural chemicals industry and Genetic modification industry which is closely related, no industry would be blindly handed the competitive advantage and almost monopoly handed to medicine. Corporations that make literally trillions of dollars get given donations by the public to research drug treatments that they then own, patent and profit from. I find that staggering.

You can make a statement about health care choice by using the term health condition rather than medical condition. Sure there are times when medicine may be the best available option but that is nowhere as often as the badly educated would think.

Where does that occur in nature?

Lots of people become frustrated and give up trying to work out what food is healthy and what food isn’t. This is largely because of conflicting media stories about what constitutes a healthy diet. I can say without a doubt that if you get your diet advice from the media you will become confused and frustrated. The manufacturers of junk food must love this confusion because it leads people to give up being discerning. I have heard people say everything you eat causes cancer so I might as well eat what I want.

There is a simple Chiropractic rule to follow in choosing food to eat. Ask yourself the question does it occur in nature, and what quantity would you consume it in in an optimal natural environment. If the food occurs in nature it’s generally healthy. Denaturing of food occurs in factories, freezers and packaging. Straight out of the ground or straight from the tree is always best.

Now you will always find some ‘sceptic’ tell you deadly poisons occur in nature (like that has never occurred to us). We don’t say everything that occurs in nature is healthy, we say everything that is healthy occurs in nature. That’s an important distinction.  It’s a bit like saying ‘all diamonds come from the ground’.  Does that mean everything that comes from the ground must be a diamond?

When you understand this simple but powerful principle you never need to be confused about diet again. You can read a newspaper article or watch the channel 9 news and make up your own mind about what is true and what is nonsense. Always ask the question ‘Where does that occur in nature?’ When you do that your judgement may be more sound than many of the so called experts.
